In Maharashtra, due to diversity in topography, parent rock, and climate, major soil types found are black (regur), laterite, red, yellowish-brown, and coastal alluvial soil. Black cotton soil, formed from the weathering of basalt rock on the Deccan Plateau, covers the largest area. Laterite soil is found in high-rainfall Konkan and Ghattop regions, while red and yellowish soil formed from ancient crystalline rocks covers eastern Vidarbha.महाराष्ट्रात भौगोलिक रचना, मूळ खडक आणि हवामानातील विविधतेमुळे काळी (रेगुर), जांभी (लॅटेराइट), तांबडी, पिवळसर-तपकिरी आणि किनारपट्टीची गाळाची मृदा असे प्रमुख प्रकार आढळतात. दख्खनच्या पठारावर बेसॉल्ट खडकाच्या अपक्षयातून निर्माण झालेली काळी कापसाची मृदा सर्वाधिक भूभाग व्यापते. अतिपर्जन्याच्या कोकण व घाटमाथ्यावर जांभी मृदा तर पूर्व विदर्भात प्राचीन स्फटिकमय खडकांपासून बनलेली तांबडी व पिवळसर मृदा विस्तारलेली आहे.
